The Glory of Kings – Inaugural Post

Yes, I admit it: I had to look up "inaugural."

A word of explanation about this post and the title of my blog. Proverbs 25:2 (ESV) reads like this:

Proverbs 25:2:

It is the glory of God to conceal things,
but the glory of kings is to search things out.

Okay, so I'm not a king. True. But isn't it still cool to search out a matter? I love to chew on Scripture, especially with other people. When Colin (running partner) and I aren't talking about the latest episode of Lost or Heroes, we're totally working on Scripture issues.

This year, I decided not to do Sunset's Word Traveler program. I had received the MP3 Listener's Bible (Awesome, BTW), and was committed to reading the New Testament while listening to the OT. Here's how I read through the NT:

1. John, and the Writings of John (1-3 John, Revelation)
2. Matthew, Hebrews
3. Mark, 1-2 Peter, James, Jude
4. Luke, Acts, Pauline Epistles (Romans-Philemon)

BTW, if you'd like an image that can be printed and then folded into a bookmark, get it here.

I also read Psalms and Proverbs, just to have something in the OT to read every day. I also committed to reading something from the Word every day. So far, so good. Okay, so there may have been a few times when my reading for the day was a little past midnight...

My NT reading wrapped up in June. I figured maybe I should go back and re-read it. Instead, I decided that since I'd gotten a new Bible for Christmas ($4 ESV), that I would read the whole thing. Why not? I've currently got 2 Kings, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel to go. I should finish this month or early December.

Now I'm reading through the NT with two guys from my Care Group. Neither of them has ever read cover to cover. Next year, I'll follow the Word Traveler plan for the OT, but continue with my current NT reading with John and Brent.

Why all the background? Well, just to let cyberspace know...I'm planning on reading the Bible cover to cover every year until my eyes dry up and fall out. I'll probably miss a few years, but that means by the time I'm 70, I'll have read it upwards of 40 times! (I'm currently 34 and working on my 4th read-through)

So I'm going to need some space to muse. Maybe it'll just be warmup to my Colin discussions, or reporting on things I discuss with Steve Gregg on his radio show. But I'll be posting some thoughts on what I've read in the Bible, or even in books about Christianity or Theology.

That's the plan.

Right now I have another Blog with no readership, over at [http://ocd-handwasher.livejournal.com]LiveJournal[/url]. Right now that's mostly used for my more creative endeavors (American Idol recaps, satire, rants, short stories). I may merge the two at some point, but for now I'll keep my serious stuff here.
