One of the problems in the church today, and one of the reasons it’s so easy to be seduced by “newspaper eschatology” is that we’ve allowed ourselves to become ignorant of the language of Scripture. In particular, the language of prophecy. And of judgment.

Thus, when we read a passage like the famous Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24, it’s easy to see what we’re commonly told to see. Namely, the Rapture/Second Coming/Tribulation. But it’s not always really there.

So, Ben Stein (of “Bueller….Bueller…?” fame) is the coolest extremely geeky man in the world. He’s got a new movie coming out about the lack of intellectual diversity in schools, as regards the teaching of Human Origins. Meaning Darwinism vs. Intelligent Design. Check out his site:

BTW, in posting a reply on Mr. Stein’s blog, I coined the term “Darwinentalists”. Feel free to use it, but please give proper attestation.

And for the football fans out there, “Darwin” + “Fundamentalist” = “Darwinentalist”.

I wanted to keep this blog pure and unsullied. You know, have everybody think I’m real holy and all that. Of course, if anybody who *knows* me reads it, I’m not pulling that off. So, I’ve decided that rather than post all my snide comments and rants on my LiveJournal, I’m going to start posting them here.

So, loyal reader (if you exist), tell me what this prophecy refers to:

Obviously, anybody reading this from the traditional Christian perspective will instantly recognize this as a prophecy of Jesus’ birth to the Virgin Mary. It’s even quoted as such in the Gospel of Matthew (1:23).

But have you ever read it in context, forgetting about what Matthew wrote? Cuz it’s interesting.

Okay, so I deliberately sculpted that title to cause scandal. Read it again, and you’ll see a missing “the” between the first two words that would have made it actually say what you thought it said. Or you thought I had English as a second language.
